Peonies are divas — and they are worth it. The key is cold water. Change the water daily, trim the stems at an angle every two days, and keep them away from direct sunlight and fruit bowls. Ethylene gas from ripening fruit is the number-one peony killer.

Orchids are the opposite — they thrive on neglect. Water once a week with three ice cubes placed at the base. Keep them in indirect light and never let the roots sit in standing water.

Both flowers benefit from a clean vase. A drop of bleach in the water prevents bacterial growth and can add 3-5 days to the life of your arrangement.
